Freedom, what is it? Is it attainable or is it just an idea that evokes a myriad of thoughts and emotions? If it is attainable, where can we find it and how can we get it? And if secured, how can we hold on to it? These are daunting questions to be sure.
We can live in slavery, prisons of our own making, or prisons imposed upon us. Prisons of our own making can quickly develop when self-serving desires drive us to overspend, over eat or over indulge in any number of ways. Soon we find our time, energy or resources consumed, leaving us poorer for the experience. And sadly, too often, we get caught in the current, only to be quickly swept away, failing to realize or recognize our rapid descent until we are trapped. Our choices can lead us away from the community and connection God desires for us to enjoy in fellowship with Him and His people. Then, we find we are confined in a prison of debt, poor heath, loneliness or worse. Shame, regret, hopelessness, hunger, or pain becomes the brick and mortar of the prison cells we occupy. There are also the prisons built by the control others impose on us, which can erode our freedom, leaving us frustrated, discouraged, angry and poor in spirit. But …
… The Lord sets prisoners free. Psalm 146:7 NIV
So let’s explore the path out of such prisons through this brief study of Country, Community and Character as we search for and discover true ‘Freedom.’
