How do you feel about those days when your eyes pop open before the alarm clock so rudely interrupts your rest? One day I awoke to a most pleasant sound – a gentle rain. And then I remembered Jesus said:

You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. Matthew 5:43-45 niv

So as we start each day, may the sights, sounds and songs of nature fill our ears and remind us to look heavenward for peace, power and provision to walk as Jesus did.

REFLECTIVE RESOURCE: Treasured Moments

Throughout life, we experience good things we'll always remember. We might not even realize at the time that they're the kind of things that will stay with us. Yet whether we're young, or old, they become treasured moments we'll revisit over and over in our minds.

“All right, let them do it,” Joab said. 2 Samuel 2:14 NIV 1984
Abner, over the troops of Israel, and Joab, over the troops of Judah, agreed to have their men engage in a sort of military game. After far too many casualties and a hot pursuit that continued to gain momentum, notice Abner and Joab’s conversation:

Then Abner called out to Joab and said, “Must the sword devour forever? Don’t you realize how bitter it will be in the end? How long until you order the people to stop pursuing their kinsmen?”
“As God lives,” Joab replied, “If you had not spoken, then surely the people would have gone up until the morning, everyone after his kinsman.” 2 Samuel 2:26-27 TLV

Only after Abner spoke did the useless killings end. Sometimes it can be difficult to speak up, especially when the words to be spoken go against the flow. But sometimes the flow needs to be slowed or stopped. So let us use our words wisely. Jesus said:

It has been said that love is a universal language. And similarly that a smile communicates friendliness in all cultures. God’s Word also provides us with some universal actions:

Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.
Be joyful always; pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:15-18 NIV 1984
