“They are light-bearers,” I said. The conversation continued, rapport and understanding developed, and soon I was on my way to other life happenings. But the words that slipped out of my mouth continued to ring in my ears: ‘They are light-bearers.’
‘They’ are friends of mine. And they, like me, were facing monumental challenges; challenges with the potential to snuff out the light within. Yet, how do we successfully overcome so the light within will shine brighter? I pondered this question hours later.
Later that afternoon, I had the opportunity to enjoy mild temperatures and a summer breeze on our back patio. Birds called to one another, leaves on the trees waved and resounded with the passing winds, and my mind continued to question.
The setting sun cast shadows as my soul pondered the magnificent light. It was a special time of day when brilliant photos can be captured because of how the light illuminates ordinary objects in an extraordinary way. But as the light faded, only the routine remained. Yes, the light made all the difference. It was exquisite. It was delightful. It magically made ordinary objects more beautiful.
Again, I searched for answers. How, Lord? How are we to continue so Your light shines through us? I was less anxious by now, calmed by the appeal of creation, moved to admire the Creator. And I was more determined to seek Him and implore Him to let His light shine through me. Truly, it is as He illuminates our souls that the world is a better place.
Finally, I remembered His Word:
You are the light of the world …
Matthew 5: 14 niv
And the words of a skillful writer helped me regain a right focus:
… Lord, for Your honor and glory, I’m going to do the right thing.
I’m going to honor You and face my battles in the power of Your name.” *
Then a little further down he penned:
remember for whom you are fighting”*
So in the challenges, let us seek Him. Let us serve Him. Let us be bearers of His light.
This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
1 John 5:3-5 niv
Are you a light-bearer for Jesus?
