Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be many … Deuteronomy 11:18-21 NIV
“What is Jesus’ favorite color,” he asked.
He and his sister had stayed at our house overnight. His parents had bragged on his reading skills, so I wanted to hear him read. And read he did! For his young years, he surprised me. Sometime back I had decided to encourage my children and grandchildren to read the book that had transformed my life – The Holy Bible.
The plan was simple, each time they read an entire book in the Bible, they would write one verse that was their favorite. Sharing it with me would result in a reward. I knew their young minds would not comprehend everything they read, but this easy exercise would plant seeds. Since this young guy was so good at reading, I knew it was time to introduce it to him.
He was excited to learn that 2 John had only one chapter, so he readily accepted the challenge. He wrote a verse, added his name and the current date. Upon receiving his reward ($1.00), he was thrilled. Soon thereafter, it was bedtime. But the next morning found him sprawled on the floor, nose in the Bible, with reading and writing on his agenda. A smile rose on my face.
After having my own time of prayer and study, he wanted to read more and chose Jude, another with only one chapter. He was slow to write a verse from the book and shared many thoughts with me along the way. He spoke of movies he had recently viewed with his parents to games they had played. I learned of school friends and a recent scrape on his finger. On and on the young child’s adventures went. Then he mentioned this exercise was like writing a book report, except without the pictures.
Seizing the idea, I told him he could draw a picture once the verse was written if he so desired. Excitement filled his voice when he finished and asked, “What is Jesus’ favorite color?”
How do you answer such a question? Running my mind through my knowledge of the Bible, I could not recall much recorded about colors. Then the old song slipped through my lips: ‘Jesus loves the little children. All the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world.’
His curious eyes found mine and we exchanged a warm smile across the room. We shared a virtual hug and moment of tenderness. Several verses came to mind and I reveled in the goodness of God.
This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 1 John 5:2 NIV
