You’re invited … the words on the lovely card created a sense of anticipation: You’re Invited. Who sent this one? What is the occasion? When will the happy moment be celebrated? Do my schedule and responsibilities allow room for one more … ?
Have you been there recently? You know, juggling tasks, timelines, demands on your energy and sanity? While you feel honored and want to celebrate with yet another group of happy people, the tug between your heart and your mind makes you pause.
Yet, You’re Invited could be some of the warmest, most welcoming words we have in our language today. These engaging words relay a message of inclusion letting you know that your presence is desired. Your participation is valued. You are wanted just as you are.
Yet what if those words were never heard? What if you waited your whole life and an invitation never came? Would you wonder why no one reached out to you? Might you question your friendships and acquaintances? Would time pass slowly and dreadfully while you waited, and waited, and waited some more to join in, hoping to celebrate community and connectivity?
Fortunately, for all of us, for all of humanity, those words were etched into eternity for us when Jesus came as a baby to our world. He came to connect us to His Father, Abba God.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. John 3:16-21 niv
