Having stood there for what seemed to me a very long time, my curiosity finally burst through in the form of a question. “What are kup’eez?” I asked.
I do not remember what my parents were doing as we stood near the exit of the grocery store, but I knew I had to be still and quiet to avoid getting into trouble. So as we waited I decided to occupy myself by visually examining everything nearby. Since I was quite familiar with the surroundings, I was rather bored with the lack of visual stimulation. There was a display of floor shampooers for rent with accompanying bottles of cleaner, a large window displaying weekly sales and a bulky looking machine making ‘kup’eez’ available for 5 cents.
Having passed my eyes over seemingly everything within view for the third time, my curiosity would wait no longer. Speaking in a whisper so as not to be too loud or disruptive, I finally asked my brother about the kup’eez. I had looked at each letter on the sign for some time and attempted to sound them out. But the strange looking machine yielded no clues. With his one word answer, the mystery was solved and my mind was enlightened. He simply said, “Copies.”
My greatest effort to understand the strange machine I had studied ended in failure. I was quite young and simply did not comprehend what my eyes were seeing. That memory from long ago returned to me this morning, and I began to wonder how often we might misunderstand God’s goodness, possibly mislabeling Him much like I had with the copy machine. Fortunately, like having a big brother to help us, we have opportunity to read His inspired Word, The Holy Bible, so we can know Him and learn about His nature.
A one-word answer cleared my misconception and I immediately understood the awkwardly large machine I beheld. Perhaps a one-word answer could clear our misconceptions about the God who created us and who inspired men to write instructions for our benefit. And just what might that one word be? Love – a simple yet mysterious word easily misrepresented and often misunderstood.
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.
God is love …
What is love? How can we truly know? In His loving reach to us, God again inspired a writer to explain:
Did you notice how powerful Love is? God’s Word says, ‘it never fails.’ Therefore, since God is love, He never fails. Not so sure about that? Remember, His Word says:
… God is love …
