The drape was large and reminded me of an oversized apron. The swirly pattern on the fabric presented an elegant, yet contemporary flare. Just beneath the surface a small ball-like shape seemed to be bouncing ever so slightly. Raising my eyes from what lay beneath, I met her eyes seemingly dancing with delight. And indeed, I think both our hearts soared as she nursed this newborn bundle of joy.
My heart swelled at the sight. I knew just below the drape was my first-born grandchild, a tiny little person whose presence had already captured the hearts of so many. But his health and growth depended on an appropriate quantity of milk. And one day he would require more, learning to enjoy solid foods.
She told me he would often fall asleep, content and relaxed in her arms long before feeding time should end. In an effort to ensure his continued growth and nourishment, she would gently wiggle his head to awaken him.
The memory of that moment replayed in my mind as I thought of so many people, like newborn babes, starving for the life-giving Word of God. We find truth, hope, help and direction there. Yet how many have fallen asleep, content to feel good, maybe warm and safe, when their very health could be at risk for lack of adequate sustenance?
Consider this:
Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk,
so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,
now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
1 Peter 2:2-3 niv
Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant,
is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
Hebrews 5:13 niv
So what about you? Do you read His Word, The Holy Bible, often enough to nourish your soul? How regularly do you feed yourself, reading and thinking about the words God provided for healthy, growing souls?
Are you familiar with what the Scriptures say? What have you recently read that changed your attitude or behavior? What new insights have you gained?
Growing pains may come, yet the growth will be marvelous, much as our grandson is transforming into a marvelous little boy. And one day he will be a strong, mature man.
How are our souls progressing? We can determine to include soul care in our daily routines. And what better time than as we begin a new year?
… Our greatest wish and prayer is that you will become mature Christians.
