Our schedule of commitments had been busier than usual, and my body was starting to tell me about it. On this particular morning, I left for work later than intended. My body was tired. My mind was fuzzy. It felt as though I were merely trudging through to meet the obligations of yet another day. Indeed, my spirit was willing, but my flesh was weak as Jesus once said of His disciples.
Thankfully, traffic on my commute to work was lighter than usual. And as I drove along, the sun reached through the window and warmed my skin. It was such a welcoming start to this new day. Then I made the familiar turn, and my eyes were suddenly blinded. The sun had risen to just the right point where I simply could not see what might lie before me.
The orange and yellow hues were more brilliant than in previous days. Its round shape seemed larger, too. But no longer was its warmth and caressing touch to my skin calling my attention. Instead, my focus shifted to safe navigation. And, of course, wouldn’t you know it, when I made that turn, the traffic seemed to increase as well.
Now my otherwise quiet commute to work became more intense. Now I had to really watch closely since the sun was directly in my eyes. Now I was concerned that another commuter might make a sudden maneuver just in front of me that I might not see in time to avoid an impact.
I would typically have been frustrated, knowing I was already running late to start my workday and simply did not need such an annoyance. Yet at the beginning of this bone weary day, I was delighted, even thrilled at the magnificent display before me. On this day, I found a quiet joy bubbling deep within.
Realization soon came as I remembered that God said …
“As long as the earth endures,
seedtime and harvest,
cold and heat,
summer and winter,
day and night
will never cease.”
Genesis 8:22 niv
The brightness of the sun blinded me on this particular morning. My commute was hindered by its brilliance. Yet my soul rejoiced. Before me was a brilliant display, a breathtaking testimony of the faithfulness of God. He said, “As long as the earth endures … day and night will never cease.”
With every new day, He reaches to us, faithfully displaying His promise in the sky, a confirmation of His faithfulness. And He is always faithful to fulfill His Word.
So as I began the journey of my day, tired as I was, there was a confidence that kept me moving forward. Soon my heart began to say: Thank You, Abba, for Your Word and Your faithfulness. And thank You for supplying what I need, even as Your Word says …
I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint.
My mind quickly turned from the weariness I felt to the faithfulness of God. Just a simple splash of sunshine in my eyes and its warmth on my skin became a refreshing energy to my soul. And what a delight to know the evidence of His reach to us is on display every day.
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.
Psalm 19:1-2 niv
Let us thank and praise Him, reveling in His goodness, enjoying the skies as they proclaim the work of his hands.
